In Katroo, every year, on the day you were born
They start the day right in the bright early morn
When the Birthday Honk-Honker hikes high up Mt. Zorn
And lets loose a big blast on the big Birthday Horn.
And the voice of the horn calls out loud as it plays:
“Wake Up! For today is your Day of all Days!”
If you suspected this quote was from a Dr. Seuss book, you are absolutely right. Why am I recommending a little kid’s picture book for Operation Story Share? Two reasons:
- Today is Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
- Yesterday was Cindy’s birthday.
And if that weren’t enough reasons, Cindy told me that Happy Birthday to You! was one of her favorite books when she was young. She so wished that the Birthday Bird was real and would fly through her window on her birthday and whisk her away on all those incredible Dr. Seussian adventures.
When I read it, I wished the Birthday Bird was real, too. Who wouldn’t want to have a big munch-er-oo on the back of a Smorgasbord’s back? Or ride in boats pulled through the air by Funicular Goats? And next year, I really want to have my Big Birthday Party in the Birthday Pal-alace where there are exactly nine thousand, four hundred and three rooms, not including the sixty-five rooms just for keeping the Sweeping-Up-Afterward-Brooms!
When it ends,
You’re much happier,
Richer and fatter.
And the Bird flies you home
On a very soft platter.
What the Birthday Bird
Does in Katroo.
And I wish
I could do
All these great things for you!
Happy Birthday to two of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss and Cindy! And also to all my fans, whenever their birthdays are. You don’t have to be a little kid to enjoy reading Happy Birthday to You! by Dr. Seuss when your special day rolls around. (Or any day!)
